Young Adult Project
The Young Adult Project is not classroom-based, but rather, is a coordinated set of community-based activities that is student-led with the guidance of a teacher consultant and/or a teacher assistant.
The activities are geared toward transitioning the student towards their post-secondary vision and goals.
- We assist each student in building bridges of support and connecting them to a variety of supports depending on individual needs- including but not limited to: Michigan Rehabilitative Services (MRS), Community Supports and Treatment Services (CSTS), Community Mental Health (CMH), and community transportation, friends and family.
- The young adult agrees to engage in adult problem-solving and adult scheduling. The young adult can negotiate their own schedule and transportation with a level of independence.
Overall Goals and Practice
The Young Adult develops a plan that includes:
- Sustainable resources
- Increased self-advocacy within the adult systems
- Seamless transition to post-school adult services
- Involvement in the community, recreation, leisure and adult daily living
- Participation in work (competitive employment) or making progress toward sustainable work settings
- Consideration of independent living situations, with support as needed
- Ongoing work towards a young adult’s maximum potential for independence in their community
- Involvement in meaningful and productive activities for themselves and/or their community
